It allows buyers to purchase the electric SUV at a much lower upfront price and pay separately for the battery based on how much they drive. This is why the BE 6 SPORTEQ has a headline starting price of Rs 11.45 lakh, even though the battery-inclusive price starts at Rs 19.45 lakh. The difference is not a discount on the same car. Under BaaS, the battery is separated from the vehicle price and customers pay a usage charge of Rs 3.75 per km.

The concept can make an EV more affordable to buy, but it also changes how you pay for and own the vehicle. So, if you are considering a BE 6 SPORTEQ with BaaS, here is everything you need to know.

What is Battery-as-a-Service?

Battery-as-a-Service is an ownership model where the battery is separated from the upfront price of the electric vehicle.

Normally, when you buy an EV, you pay for the vehicle and its battery together. The battery is one of the most expensive components of an EV, so it makes the purchase price considerably higher.

With BaaS, the battery cost is moved out of the initial vehicle price. You pay a lower amount to purchase the vehicle and then pay a separate battery usage charge based on the distance you drive.

In the case of the BE 6 SPORTEQ, Mahindra has set this battery charge at Rs 3.75 per km for the eligible 59kWh versions.

This means BaaS does not mean that the battery is free. You are essentially paying for access to the battery over time instead of purchasing it as part of the car.

Why is Mahindra offering BaaS?

The biggest reason is the upfront price. Electric cars are expensive mainly because of their battery. Removing the battery cost from the initial purchase price allows manufacturers to advertise a much lower starting price.

For the BE 6 SPORTEQ, the difference is significant.

The SPORTEQ One with the 59kWh battery costs Rs 19.45 lakh with the battery included. Under BaaS, the vehicle costs Rs 11.45 lakh, with the additional Rs 3.75 per km battery charge. That reduces the initial ex-showroom price by Rs 8 lakh.

The SPORTEQ Two follows the same structure. It costs Rs 20.95 lakh with the battery, while the BaaS price is Rs 12.95 lakh plus Rs 3.75 per km.

This can make a premium electric SUV more accessible to buyers who do not want to spend the full battery-inclusive amount upfront.

How does BE 6 BaaS work?

The simplest way to understand it is to divide your payment into two parts.

First, you pay for the vehicle. For the SPORTEQ One, this is Rs 11.45 lakh under BaaS. Second, you pay for battery usage. Mahindra has announced a battery usage charge of Rs 3.75 per km.

So, if you drive 1,000 km, the battery usage charge would be Rs 3,750. If you drive 2,000 km, it would be Rs 7,500, and if you drive 3,000 km, it would be Rs 11,250.

These figures are based purely on the announced Rs 3.75 per km rate.

Importantly, this is not your complete EV running cost. You still have to pay for the electricity required to charge the vehicle.

Does BaaS include charging costs?

No.

This is one of the most important things buyers need to understand. The Rs 3.75 per km is the battery service charge. It does not cover the electricity you use to charge the BE 6.

For example, if you charge the car at home, you will pay your electricity provider for the electricity consumed. If you use a public charging station, you will pay the charging operator. So your actual running cost with BaaS consists of Battery service charge and electricity cost. You will also have the normal costs of owning a car, such as insurance, tyres, servicing, parking and tolls.

Which BE 6 variants get BaaS?

Mahindra is not offering BaaS across the entire BE 6 SPORTEQ range.

It is currently available with the 59kWh battery on the SPORTEQ One and SPORTEQ Two variants.

The pricing is:

Variant

BaaS price

Battery-inclusive price

SPORTEQ One 59kWh

Rs 11.45 lakh + Rs 3.75/km

Rs 19.45 lakh

SPORTEQ Two 59kWh

Rs 12.95 lakh + Rs 3.75/km

Rs 20.95 lakh

All prices are ex-showroom.

The newer 70kWh and larger 79kWh battery versions are not currently listed with this BaaS option.

Do you own the battery with BaaS?

This is where BaaS is different from conventional EV ownership. Under the BaaS model, you are not simply getting an Rs 8 lakh discount on the battery. The battery is separated from the vehicle purchase and covered by a separate service arrangement.

You therefore need to look at the BaaS agreement to understand the exact rights and responsibilities related to the battery. This includes questions about battery ownership, warranty, transfer of the agreement and what happens when you sell the vehicle.

Mahindra’s public launch announcement confirms the BaaS price and per-kilometre charge, but does not provide all of these long-term contractual details.

That is why buyers should read the actual BaaS agreement before making a booking.

What happens if the battery loses capacity?

Battery degradation is one of the biggest concerns for EV buyers. Every lithium-ion battery loses some capacity over time. This means the maximum range can gradually reduce as the battery gets older.

One of the reasons BaaS can be attractive is that the battery becomes a service rather than simply an expensive component that you have purchased outright.

However, buyers should not assume that every battery-related issue is automatically covered.

Mahindra provides battery warranty and State of Health provisions for its electric SUVs, but the exact warranty and BaaS terms applicable to the SPORTEQ should be checked in the documents provided with the vehicle.

Before booking, ask the dealer specifically about:

Battery warranty

Minimum guaranteed State of Health

Battery replacement conditions

Who pays for battery replacement

What happens after the battery warranty ends

Whether the BaaS agreement changes if the battery is replaced

These details can matter more over a long ownership period than the initial Rs 8 lakh saving.

Is there a minimum monthly payment?

This is an area where buyers should be particularly careful.

Some early buyer discussions online claim that the BaaS arrangement has a minimum monthly usage requirement of around 1,800 km, which would translate to Rs 6,750 per month at Rs 3.75 per km. However, this minimum is not clearly stated in Mahindra’s public launch announcement. Therefore, it should not be treated as a confirmed standard term without checking the actual agreement.

If you are planning to buy the BE 6 and drive only a few hundred kilometres a month, ask the dealer or BaaS provider:

“Is the Rs 3.75 per km charge based only on my actual kilometres, or is there a minimum monthly kilometre commitment?”

This one answer can significantly change the economics of BaaS for low-mileage users.

What happens when you sell the BE 6?

This is another important question. With a normal EV, you sell the car along with its battery. With BaaS, there is a separate battery service arrangement. So you need to understand what happens to that agreement when the vehicle changes hands.

Potential questions include:

Can the BaaS agreement be transferred to the new owner?

Does the new owner need to sign a new agreement?

Can you close the BaaS arrangement before selling the vehicle?

Can you purchase the battery before selling the car?

Is there a settlement amount?

Is there a transfer fee?

Does the BaaS agreement affect the resale process?

Mahindra has not publicly detailed all these scenarios in its launch announcement, so buyers should get written clarification before booking.

This is especially important if you normally change cars after three or four years.

Can you buy the battery later?

Do not assume that you can simply pay the remaining battery value later and convert a BaaS car into a conventional battery-owned EV. Whether this is possible, and at what price, depends on the actual BaaS contract.

A buyer interested in this option should ask the dealer for the exact battery buyout terms before signing the agreement. If there is a buyout option, ask whether the price is fixed in advance or calculated based on the battery’s age, usage or remaining value.

Does BaaS reduce the EMI?

It can reduce the amount you need to finance, because the initial vehicle price is lower. For example, the SPORTEQ One costs Rs 11.45 lakh under BaaS compared with Rs 19.45 lakh when the battery is included. If you finance the vehicle, the loan amount can therefore be lower.

But remember that the BaaS payment does not disappear. You still have the per-kilometre battery charge while using the car. So your monthly outgo will include Car EMI, BaaS payment, and electricity charges.

The better option depends on your down payment, loan interest rate, tenure and monthly driving.

Is BaaS the same as leasing the battery?

Not exactly.

It is better to think of BaaS as a separate battery service arrangement rather than simply saying that you are leasing the battery.

The exact legal and financial structure depends on the agreement between the customer and the relevant BaaS provider.

For the buyer, the important point is simple: the battery is separated from the upfront vehicle price, and you pay for battery usage separately.

What other costs do you have to pay?

BaaS does not cover the other costs of buying and owning the BE 6.

You still need to account for:

Registration

Road tax, where applicable

Insurance

Charger

Charger installation

Electricity

Servicing

Tyres

Parking

Toll charges

Accessories

Financing interest

The wall charger and installation are also separate from the advertised ex-showroom vehicle price. This means the Rs 11.45 lakh figure should not be treated as the final amount you need to buy and start using the BE 6.

What are the advantages of BaaS?

The biggest advantage is the lower upfront price. For the BE 6 SPORTEQ One, you save Rs 8 lakh on the initial vehicle purchase compared with buying the battery outright. This can make the EV easier to finance and leaves more money available for other expenses.

BaaS also changes how you think about the battery. Instead of paying the entire battery cost upfront, you pay according to usage. For some buyers, this can be more comfortable than spending a large amount on an expensive battery that will gradually age.

What are the disadvantages?

The biggest disadvantage is that the battery charge becomes a recurring running cost.

The more you drive, the more you pay.

At Rs 3.75 per km:

1,000 km = Rs 3,750

2,000 km = Rs 7,500

3,000 km = Rs 11,250

This is before electricity costs.

There is also less clarity around long-term questions such as resale, agreement transfer and battery buyout until customers can examine the complete BaaS contract.

What should you ask the dealer before booking?

The Rs 11.45 lakh price can be attractive, but don’t make a booking based only on the headline price.

Ask the dealer for the complete BaaS agreement and get clear answers to these questions:

Is there a minimum monthly kilometre commitment?

How exactly are kilometres measured?

What happens if I drive less than the minimum?

Is the Rs 3.75/km rate fixed for the entire agreement?

Can the rate increase later?

Who legally owns the battery?

What battery warranty applies?

What happens if battery capacity falls below the guaranteed level?

Who pays for battery replacement?

Can the BaaS agreement be transferred when I sell the car?

Can I buy the battery later?

How is the battery buyout price calculated?

What happens if I want to end the agreement early?

Are there foreclosure, cancellation or transfer charges?

What happens to the BaaS agreement if the vehicle is written off after an accident?

Getting these answers in writing is much better than relying on a salesperson’s verbal explanation.

BaaS is not automatically cheaper

The most important thing to understand is that BaaS is not a discount that makes the battery disappear from the cost of the car. It changes when and how you pay for the battery. You pay less when buying the vehicle, but you then pay a separate charge based on your usage.

If you want a lower upfront price, this can be useful. However, if you drive a lot or plan to keep the vehicle for many years, the recurring battery payments need to be considered carefully. That is why the Rs 11.45 lakh starting price of the BE 6 SPORTEQ tells only part of the story.

The next question is how much the car will actually cost you to own over three, five or more years. That calculation depends heavily on how many kilometres you drive every month, how you charge the car and how long you keep it.

Mahindra has introduced Battery-as-a-Service, or BaaS, with the new BE 6 SPORTEQ.
