ABS or Anti-Lock Braking System will not be an optional feature for Indian cars anymore. The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways has issued an official statement, making ABS mandatory for all new cars starting from April 2019.
Not just this, all new models launched after April 2018 are also required to offer ABS as the standard feature. This decision is a part of the government’s step to ensure safety and brings down the accident and death rate on Indian roads.
This step is important because studies confirm that presence of ABS in a car can help reduce the risk of an accident by over 20%. So, having ABS will surely bring down the accident rates.
To offer affordable cards, automakers put safety features optional. So, entry level cars generally ignore safety features including ABS, Air Bags and offer these only in high-end models.
With mandatory ABS, prices of cars will surely go up from Rs. 20,000 to Rs. 30,000 but this small price will help in ensuring the safety of car drivers.
