After years of delays, teasers, and talks, Tesla is officially coming to India. The company dropped a “Coming Soon” poster on its X handle with “India” written on it, and that was enough to get everyone excited.
The company is opening its first showroom in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex, one of the most expensive and premium locations in the city. The launch event is scheduled for July 15. Tesla has also leased over 24,000 square feet of warehouse space at Lodha Logistics Park in Mumbai.
Reports suggest that Tesla has already shipped its first batch of cars to India. These are said to be Model Y rear-wheel drive units, shipped from the company’s plant in China. And to make it official, Tesla recently got a trade certificate from the Andheri RTO. This allows the company to display vehicles, offer test drives, and even start sales.
So yes, Tesla is finally entering the Indian market. But with imported cars and no local manufacturing, prices will be high. It will be interesting to see how many people are ready to spend big on a Tesla in its current form.
